COLD (Computer Output to Laser Disk) software allows you to transfer documents from expensive mainframe storage, onto an inexpensive, long-term storage. COLD operates through the capture of print files (such as line printers) and rendering the output to electronic documents, typically in a document management system.
Historically, early document management systems relied on optical disks and optical disk jukeboxes to provide storage, hence the acronym COLD. COLD is also sometimes called Enterprise Report Management, or ERM, since one of its uses is to turn old greenbar mainframe reports to digital documents.
